Will you marry me?

The mutual promise of two people to marry, is called an engagement. With an engagement, the couple testifies to their desire to marry. An engagement or betrothal also refers to the period of time between a marriage proposal and the marriage itself.

During this period, a couple is said to be fiancés, betrothed, intended, affianced, engaged to be married, or simply engaged. And they show this commitment with mostly a diamond.

The ritual of proposing is an ancient tradition that has been practised for several hundred years. In the past, it was common for the future husband to negotiate the terms of marriage with the bride’s father.

If both agreed, the groom handed over the marriage dowry to the bride’s father – a kind of down payment. This was considered an official engagement. Later the reverse exchange of goods became common, the bride and her family brought in the marriage dowry.

Today an engagement is an emotional and romantic occasion, maybe with or without the traditional customs that goes around it in each culture, but it remains a happy and very emotional time.

For the vast majority of couples, a diamond ring is an important part of a successful proposal.

However, Princess Diana, Jackie Kennedy, Victoria Beckham, Halle Berry, Princess Eugenie – they all chose non-diamond, gemstone engagement rings. Gemstone engagement rings are becoming more and more popular due to their unique style, large size, sparkling colours, and lower cost.

Because all gemstones have different levels of hardness, not all gemstones are good engagement ring center stones. In other words, it’s important to know which gemstones will withstand the test of time, which mens they need to be high on the Mohs Hardness Scale.
